Doug's Girls vs Mother Nature

Mother Nature has been testing Doug's Girls this week!  We started the week with a 5.9 magnitude earthquake and we're ending it with Hurricane Irene!  Yes.  Believe it or not, we had an earthquake on Tuesday!  I certainly need to brush up on my earthquake drills because this Mama had no clue what was going on, and no idea what I was supposed to do with my babies!  Bug, Lulu and I were on our way to Romp n Roll camp, sitting at a stoplight, when all of a sudden, Pearl started shaking, and shaking, and didn't stop shaking for at least 2 minutes!  I thought she was going to explode!  The possibility of an earthquake never entered my mind until we got to camp and everyone was freaked out!  Fortunately, the aftershocks were not that bad.  I only felt one while I was upstairs changing Lulu's diaper, and if that was an aftershock, I sure am glad that we weren't in the house during the real deal, because we all 3 of us would probably need our diapers changed!!

The day after the big quake, the girls and I went to see our friend Caroline, her mommy Lauren, and the twins, Margaret and Julia.  Buggy was still a little shaken up from the earthquake, so she decided to sport Caroline's helmet for a little while, just to be safe!

Bug's favorite toy this week is her baby stroller, so she was very excited to see that Caroline had one too!  Except hers is much cooler because it's a double stroller since she has twin baby sisters.  Bug kept calling it a "big stroller" and asking about the "two baby sisters!"

Lulu enjoyed trying out a new bouncer for a change.  (Buggy broke her pink chair this week!  It was only a matter of time!)

After we dragged out just about every toy Caroline owned, we headed outside to enjoy the nice weather (because we knew it wouldn't be long before Hurricane Irene hit!)  Hailey and Caroline had great fun chasing each other up and down the sidewalk!

Best buds!

Lulu enjoyed some girl time with Julia.  (Margaret was inside sleeping)

While trying to get a cute porch pic, Buggy spotted one of her favorite things, an airplane, and both girls quickly got distracted!

"Say cheese!"

"What's that sound?" (Buggy asks that question at least 20 times a day now!)

"Airplane in the sky, up there!"

"Wow!"

Buggy had her own battle with "mother nature" at Romp n Roll camp on Thursday.  Ever since Lulu was born, she's been obsessed with "diapee changes."  All of her stuffed animals and dolls get diapee changes and she loves to help when Lainey needs one.  But she's also been very particular about who changes her diaper.  Apparently, the cute high school girls at the Romp n Roll camp are not on her list of approved diapee changers! Ninety minutes into camp on Thursday, I got a call saying that Bug got so upset when they tried to change her diap, that she got sick and threw up!  Poor little girl!  Perhaps this will scare her into potty training!

I felt bad that she had such a rough time (even though she stayed for the other half of camp, and was as happy as could be!), so Mommy took her to Chick-fil-a to get some nuggets and a peach shake!  Yum!  Note her huge, wet diaper hanging out of the bottom of her shorts!

Bug is still all about her baby dolls!  This dolly is named "Baby Fifi".

And her American Girl doll is called "Baby JeeJee."

But she loves her baby Lulu the most!

Bug loves to help Mommy blog and was helping me start this blog entry the day the hurricane blew in and blew out our power!

She's been sucking her fingers a lot more ever since Lainey was born...

Bug was very excited to see what all this "Hurricane Irene" talk was about.  She was asking about it all day!  We spent the morning playing inside while the rain started coming down.

Lainey played with her toys too!

But mostly, Buggy just wanted to look out the window and say "it's raining Mommy, Daddy!"

It didn't take long for us to loose power on Saturday morning.  And when we lost it, we lost it for good.  It didn't come back on until Monday afternoon.  Doug spent a lot of the time in the office, because they still had power (75% of Richmond lost power, but of course, it's still work as usual for Harris Williams & Co.!) so I had to get pretty creative in my efforts to entertain a 2 year old and a 2 month old!  We spent a lot of the time eating all the food in our fridge and watching dvds until the battery ran out.  Then we played flash light tag and watched the storm.

Fortuntaley, Lulu's new bouncer chair came (in the middle of the hurricaine no less!  Gotta love UPS and Diapers.com!!) so she stayed pretty entertained!

Each of us had our own flashlight, and boy did they come in handy!

Buggy's didn't last too long because she kept beating it against the bricks on the front poarch, and it soon broke.  But then she used it to point at the wind and the trees swaying (as if we couldn't see them for ourselves!)

Daddy helped put Lainey to bed, by walking around with her in the sling, and then Mommy and Daddy spent a few hours sitting on the porch, watching the storm and drinking wine!

After 2 days, we started to go stir crazy, and our house started to get sweaty, and our laundry started to pile up, so we headed over to Boss' house for a sleepover.  They only lost power for 2 hours (I'm still a little bitter!) so we loaded up Pearl and invaded their home, and Boss' 3rd birthday celebration!!

Buggy was over the moon excited about singing "Happy Birthday" and eating "happy birthday cupcakes!"

I still don't get why Buggy was cheesing it up for LL's camera, but it takes major bribery for her to smile for mine!

After the sleepover, we came back home and met Gigi, because they lost power too.  Bug was very excited to see her waiting on her steps and they got right down to business and started coloring and taking trips to the park!

After the third park trip, when everyone was escpecially sweatish, the power came back on and we all jumped for joy!  Then, Mommy got right down to business and did laundry, dishes, gave everyone showers and did some major lawn cleanup!  We also got to visit with Caroline and her sisters again, while they were waiting for their power to come back on.

It was a crazy week, full of earthquakes, traumatic diapee changes and hurricanes.  The funny thing is, I don't think Buggy even batted an eye at any of it!  To her, it was just another week of playdates, park trips and chicken nuggets, and that makes this Mama smile!

Here's to hoping this week is a little more boring!

  1. Very cute post! Glad you guys had somewhere to go with power. Love the picture of Hailey in front of the red door (minus the diaper). :)
